The film follows the trials and tribulations of an ordinary family from 1965 to the early 1970s. Their journey through the years from their humble kampong to a modern HDB flat, runs in parallel with Singapore’s early growth. On 9 August 1965, the day Singapore declares her independence, Zhao Di is driven away from her husband with three daughters, and the same night gives birth to twin son and daughter, Shun Fatt and Su-mei. Unfortunately, she is forced to give Su-mei away for she is born with two moles on her face which is seen as a sign of misfortune for the family. With Zhao Di’s indomitable spirit, the family perseveres to make a better life for themselves eventually to witness every step of the nation’s growth.

BIOGRAPHY

Director | Jack Neo

Jack Neo first won local audiences over with his signature comedic hosting style in variety programmes in the 90s. Besides acting and hosting, he was also the creative brain behind Comedy Night, Singapore’s longest running comedy variety show. He made his film debut in 1998 with Money No Enough, an all-time highest grossing Singaporean film until 2012. He then wrote, directed and produced movies such as I Not Stupid (2002), Homerun (2003), romantic comedy I Do I Do (2005), and We Not Naughty (2012). Jack Neo broke box office records with his army trilogy Ah Boys To Men (2012, 2013 & 2015). With Homerun, he won Singapore’s first international film award. Being one of the most prolific filmmakers in Singapore, he received the Public Service Medal Award in 2004 and the Cultural Medallion in 2005.
